Virginia was the 10th state admitted to the Union and has a rich history as one of the dominant colonies and states in the early days prior to and immediately following the establishment of the country. With an early economy based on the production of tobacco, Virginia grew up with an established aristocracy, perhaps befitting its name, which is based on Queen Elizabeth I, who was known as the "Virgin Queen" because she never married. The state has produced eight U.S. presidents, giving rise to one of its nicknames, the "Mother of Presidents." Though the state is the 35th largest in the nation by geography, it's population of just over 7.6 million ranks it 12th in that category, with much of the population residing in and around Richmond, the state's capital, and the still burgeoning Northern Virginia metropolitan area. Virginia also has a rich diversity of geography, with the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean to the east and the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains to the West. Virginia Beach, the largest city in the state, is a popular destination for tourists and also is near an established U.S. Naval operations center.
